INTERVIEW WITH OUR AMERICAN TEACHING ASSISTANT QUINN

Students (S): Why did you come to Austria? 
Quinn: I decided to come to Austria in order to improve my German skills and immerse myself in a different culture. I’ve always loved traveling, and knew I had to take the opportunity to go abroad!
S: How old are you? 
Quinn: I am 23 years old.
S: What did you study? 
Quinn: I studied German and International Relations. I graduated in the spring of 2024, and also studied abroad for a year in Munich!
S: Could you describe the culture in the USA? 
Quinn: I think Americans tend to be very outgoing, sociable, optimistic, and open-minded. We love to make small talk with each other and exchange friendly pleasantries!
S: What skills are important as a teaching assistant? 
Quinn: As a teaching assistant, it is important to be empathetic and have good cross-cultural communication skills. Understanding that there isn’t one ‘right’ way to do things prevents misunderstandings, which is especially important when abroad. I also think that having a good understanding of politics and current events is useful, as it allows for lively discussions in class!
S: What’s the accomplishment that you are most proud of? 
Quinn: I am proud to be teaching here through Fulbright Austria. It is definitely uncomfortable to immerse oneself in a new, unfamiliar culture, but I think that’s when the most personal growth occurs. I’m proud that I took this opportunity to challenge myself, and it has already been so rewarding!
S: Who is your idol? 
Quinn: My mom is my idol because she is very wise. As an anthropologist, she always encouraged me to explore new cultures. Without her influence, I’m not sure I would have studied or worked abroad, but I am so glad I did!
S: What about your hobbies? 
Quinn: I’m very artsy! I like to play the flute, guitar, and oil paint. I also enjoy going to the gym and exploring cute Viennese coffee shops.
S: What is your favourite music genre? 
Quinn: I listen to pretty much everything but techno.
S: What is your favorite place in Austria? 
Quinn: I love the Belvedere! I’m a huge Gustav Klimt fan, so getting to see his works in person was amazing.
S: Do you have any favorite parks in Vienna? 
Quinn: Volksgarten is beautiful! I love just walking around the city.
S: Do you prefer living in Austria or America? 
Quinn: That is a difficult question. In Austria, I really appreciate the history, work/life balance, social safety nets, and the easy access to nature. It is so beautiful here! Of course, there are many things I love about Michigan—all my family and friends are there. It is a gorgeous state, and is home 4 out of 5 of the Great Lakes. In general, I value the diversity that we have as a country. I feel that that is something that is very unique to the U.S.!
S: Do you like working here? 
Quinn: Yes, very much! I really enjoy interacting with the students and having interesting discussions about current events, cultural differences, and recommendations they have for Vienna.
S: What is your favorite food in America? 
Quinn: At home, I eat a lot of Mexican food—it’s my favorite! I also love bagels and popcorn.
S: And your favourite food in Austria? 
Quinn: That would have to be Käsespätzle. The bread and pastries are also delicious.
S: What do you like to listen to? 
Quinn: I like to listen to news podcasts. NPR is my favorite.
S: Who will be president in 2028? Make an educated guess! 
Quinn: Unsure! I think it is likely that Gavin Newsom will be the democratic nominee.
S: What event changed you the most? 
Quinn: Studying abroad pushed me out of my comfort zone and made me more independent. Prior to that, I’d always lived very close to my family and always in the same area of Michigan. It opened my eyes to how big and exciting the world truly is!
S: What are your goals concerning education? 
Quinn: After this year, I plan to get my Master of Public Policy then work as a comparative social policy analyst. I’m very interested in analyzing social policy differences between the U.S. and Austria. Living here has given me the opportunity to see Austrian educational policies in action, and I feel that having a more global mindset will be fruitful in my future ambitions.
S: Favorite show 
Quinn: “The Office”!
S: Favorite movies 
Quinn: “Harry Potter”. I also love “Little Women”.
S: What advice would you give to students who want to follow your path? 

Quinn: I would definitely encourage students to take any chance they have to go abroad! Explore your interests and research which programs for international exchange exist. I’d also encourage you to look into Fulbright Austria, as they place Austrians throughout the U.S.!
S: Who is your favorite actor? 
Quinn: Saoirse Ronan.
S: And your favorite artist? 
Quinn: Right now, I’m really loving Olivia Dean!
S: Do you think Democrats will win in 2028? 
Quinn: I hope they do!!
S: How would you describe yourself in a few words? 
Quinn: The words that come to mind are: curious, artistic, intuitive.
