3IK in Malta

Study English – Learn about Marketing & Tourism – Sightseeing – Fun

In December 2016 the 3IK students together with their English teacher Mr. Schattner flew to Malta to improve their English language skills and have a great time.

Malta is situated at the heart of the Mediterranean and the crossroads of Africa, Europe and the Middle East. Consequently, this country has been strategically vital to many civilisations. Throughout its history, Malta has been the echo chamber of world events and shifts of power. The Maltese Islands went through a golden Neolithic period, the remains of which are the mysterious temples dedicated to the goddess of fertility. Later on, the Phoenicians, the Carthaginians, the Romans and the Byzantines, all left their traces on the Islands. In 60 A.D. St. Paul was shipwrecked on the island while on his way to Rome and brought Christianity to Malta. The Arabs conquered the islands in 870 A.D. and left an important mark on the language of the Maltese. The Order of St. John of Jerusalem ruled over Malta from 1530 to 1798. The Knights took Malta through a new golden age. In 1798, Napoleon Bonaparte took over Malta from the Knights on his way to Egypt. The French presence on the islands was short lived, as the English, who were requested by the Maltese to help them against the French, blockaded the islands in 1800. British rule in Malta lasted until 1964 when Malta became independent.
Modern Malta became a Republic in 1974 and joined the European Union in May 2004.

We visited the ITS (Institute of Tourism Studies) and the 5-star-hotel Westin Dragonara in St. Julian’s, attended a presentation held by the head of marketing at the EC language school and learned about the programme for Malta as European Capital of Culture in 2018.

Let’s not forget the sightseeing! We discovered Valetta, Medina, the Dingli Cliffs with fantastic open sea views and some prehistoric temples dating back to the Neolithic period.

To put it in a nutshell: we had an awesome time!
